Getting started

- Open a page, click the RefreshWatch icon, choose an interval and click Start.
- To be alerted, choose what to watch first: the whole page, one element, or a keyword.
Step-by-step guides: auto refresh in Chrome and website change alerts.
Questions and known limits
Why does it keep refreshing after I go to another site?
Without site access, plain auto refresh can't tell when you leave the site. Chrome only shows an extension a tab's address for sites it has access to, so RefreshWatch keeps refreshing that tab until you stop it.
When RefreshWatch has access to the site (because you turned on watching, clicking, keep-scroll or a saved rule there), it stops when the tab moves to a different site.
Why can't I watch chrome:// pages or the Chrome Web Store?
Chrome doesn't let any extension read or script chrome:// pages, other extensions' pages or the Chrome Web Store. RefreshWatch can still auto refresh them; the watch options are turned off there and the popup says why.
Why did my timers restart after RefreshWatch updated?
When Chrome updates an extension it clears the extension's running state. After an update, RefreshWatch restarts its rules on open tabs that match them. A tab you started by hand, without a rule, needs to be started again.
The same applies after you restart Chrome: rules start again on matching pages, hand-started tabs don't.
Why does it ask for access to a site?
Plain auto refresh doesn't need it. Reading the page to spot changes, clicking a button after reload, keeping the scroll position and saved rules do, so Chrome asks you for that one site when you turn one of them on. If you say no, auto refresh still works without the watch.
Does it work when Chrome is closed or my computer is asleep?
No. RefreshWatch runs in your browser and refreshes open tabs while Chrome is running and the computer is awake. It doesn't check pages from a server.
I didn't get an alert. What should I check?
- Make sure your operating system allows notifications from Chrome, and that the sound is turned on in the popup.
- If the page loads slowly, raise Let the page settle for under More options.
- For an element watch, check the popup for a warning that the element wasn't found. Pages that are redesigned can lose the element; pick it again.
- The change log on the options page lists every change RefreshWatch found.
I get alerts for changes I don't care about.
Watch one element instead of the whole page, or turn on Ignore changing numbers so clocks and counters don't count as changes.
Is it really free? Will that change?
Yes. There is no paid tier, trial, account or ad. Everything RefreshWatch does on your computer stays free. If a paid option ever appears, it will only add things that need a server, such as checking pages while your computer is off, and it won't lock any feature that is free today.
How do I delete my data?
Delete rules and select Clear log on the options page, or remove the extension, which deletes everything RefreshWatch stored. Details are in the privacy policy.
Which languages does it speak?
English, Arabic (right to left), German, Spanish, French, Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese. It follows Chrome's language setting.
